This documentary fiction critically investigates the spaces of the neoliberal university, invoking the dystopian fiction of JG Ballard, the apocalyptic science fiction cinema and music of John Carpenter, Peter Greenaway’s early documentary fantasies, and the archaeological analysis of the present undertaken in Patrick Keiller’s films about the British landscape.

‘Stigma machines’ takes its title from the opening theoretical essay of Prof. Imogen Tyler’s forthcoming book ‘Stigma Nation’, which emerges from a Leverhulme-funded research project into inequality, neoliberal capitalism and processes of social stigmatisation.
